It’s an island. It’s warm and sunny
all year-round. It’s part of the United
States, but it’s a unique country with
it’s own culture and history. It is one
of the premier golf destinations in the Caribbean.
It’s Puerto Rico.
The island is home to 18 courses, and 6 more
are currently under construction. In the fall
of 2004, Puerto Rico will host the World Amateur
Team Championships and will celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the Puerto Rico Golf Association.
Right now is a great time to visit the island.
While most of the United States is still experiencing
the spring-time thaw, Puerto Rico is winding
down from its’ peak tourist season. The
spring is a great time to get deals on airline
tickets, hotel rooms and packages for a Puerto
Rico vacation. The eastern coast of the island
surrounding San Juan is where the majority of
the courses are located. The best ones are on
the grounds of the island’s most luxurious
resort hotels like the Hyatt Dorado and the
Westin Rio Mar. GoToPuertoRico.com has a detailed
run down of all the golf courses on the island.
Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan is easily
reached by plane from most major cities. American
Airlines operates many non-stop flights each
day from Boston and New York. Flight time is
a little under four hours in each direction.
San Juan is also a very popular cruise destination.
Because Puerto Rico is a territory of the United
States, you will not need a passport for this
trip and you will not be required to pass through
customs. The currency is the good old American
dollar.
For all these reasons, the hassle factor is
cut way back for this island getaway. This is
the perfect spot for a long weekend on the greens.
Get out those shorts and get packing.
