Dave Pelz Putting Clips Training Aid Review

Editor's Note: Training Aids. There are thousands of training aids, but which ones are really worthwhile? RhodyGolf.com will review and recommend aids that it and its staff are familiar, and feel are worthwhile.

Teacher® Putting Clips by Pelz Golf

Teacher® Putting Clips are small aluminum clips about 3/4" high with prongs on either end that attach to any flat faced putter with double sided mylar tape. Center your selected clip on your putter sweet spot, and every stroke will give you immediate feedback on the precision of your putter impact relative to the sweet spot. Grooved edges allow for easy removal.

Excellent for use with the Truthboard or on the putting green. Set of three includes one of each difficulty level:

  • Standard
  • Pro
  • SuperPro

Who is Dave Pelz?

I am sure most readers know who Dave Pelz is, but for those who don't, he is one the leading and foremost teachers on the short game and putting. You can regularly see him on the Golf Channel.

Why do you like Dave Pelz?

Don't get me wrong, there are many great instructors that we all can learn from. The primary reason I like Dave is that he tries to quantify and measure everything he teaches.

You see Dave was a wonderful collegiate golfer. The story goes that he realized during his golfing career at Indiana University that he would never be good enough to become a professional golfer. If my memory serves me correctly, he shares with readers that he could never beat one golfer in particular during his matches - the great Jack Nicklaus.

While at Indiana University he earned his degree in engineering, and upon graduation went to work for NASA. However, while at NASA, the golf bug wouldn't go away and eventually Dave formed his own golf company.

How should I use the putting clips?

First, let me start by saying, you don't need to purchase the putting clips from Dave Pelz golf, although I would highly recommend it. You can attempt to fashion your own out of rubber-bands or other materials. However, as I mentioned before Dave Pelz golf has spent thousands of hours of research the games as well as this own products. It simply is not worth it to me, to try to fashion my own aid and have it faulty in some way that would adversely impact my training.
Dave Pelz's two books, Dave Pelz's Putting Bible and Dave Pelz's 10 Minutes a Day to Better Putting will actually discuss using this aid and other aids in great detail. Below is my personal regimen which I often do in front of my television in between commercials of PGA Tournaments and other shows:

  •  Varying Distance Putts to a specific target. I will hit putts at varying lengths with the putting clips and attempt to have the ball stop within approximately 34 inches (which is the length of my putter, and you should substitute the length of your putter here). Why? Pelz research has shown that if you can putt the ball to this distance (assuming you don't hole it) you will have a very high statistical probability of making the comeback putt.

  • Forward push, no back swing drill. Again with the clips on my putter, I will NOT TAKE ANY BACK SWING (please keep in mind that under the rules of golf, this is illegal during actual tournament and competitive play Rule...I believe that Rule 14-1 states that the ball must be fairly struck and not pushed). However, it is perfectly legal during practice. Many tour pro's will do the same thing.

  • Use with TruthBoard. As referenced above I actually also use the putting clips with a Pelz Truthboard. The truth board is three feet long, and is elevated. The purpose of the TruthBoard being elevated, is to insure that you don't leave your putts short. The elevation ingrains accelerating through impact and the makes you make aggressive, forceful putts. I think that many readers may agree with me, that it is especially frustrating when you leave a 3 foot putt short. The board also has a level which you can vary to create break on your putts.
