With
your Dave Pelz BunkerBoard and a bucket
of sand, almost any outdoor space can
be transformed into your own private practice
bunker. With each swing, the concave surface
reinforces the proper motion and "feel
through impact" for well-played sand
shots. Use the Dave Pelz BunkerBoard to
practice sand fundamentals, then step
into bunkers on your course with confidence.

This is one great product by Dave
Pelz Golf!
I have always wondered why many great players
at the professional level often say that they
feel that the sand shot is one of their most
favorite as one as one of the easiet shots in
golf. I also have found it interesting that
golf commentators will sometimes remark when
a player misses a green that the 'player must
be glad to have found the bunker, instead of
the rough around the green...he/she will have
an easy up and down from there.'
I think the problem for many recreational golfers
when it comes to sandshots is twofold:
- Most golfers do not have a good way to practice
the sand shot as most practice ranges do not
have a bunker to use for them to practice.
- Most golfers do not have a mechanism or
tool to practice the bunker shot correctly.
I have to be honest, I was VERY SUPSICIOUS
and somewhat hesitant to spend my hard-earned
money on such a product. First, I bought a different
sand trap aid about a year ago which looks like
a door mat with the middle cut out of it. This
product, in my opinion was HORRIBLE. Specificially,
I always felt like the opening was not long
enough for my club to pass correctly and would
often hit the front of the mat.
However, I decided to give the Pelz BunkerBoard
a chance after the Pelz One Day Scoring School
which I attended at Centennial
Country Club in New York. In the class,
our instructors Dave
LiCalsi and Anne
Sparks have students use this device in
an actual bunker and then try replicate the
sand shot without the device.
I was amazed how student after student started
hitting beautiful sand shots with this device.
However, what I was even more amazed by was
the quality of shots that students made after
removing the device and hitting directly from
the sand.
So, am I simply recommending this device only
on my one day interaction as the Pelz One Day
Scoring School. In a simple word the answer
is 'NO'.
After the school I began incorporating the
device into my regular practice routines. I
bought a 50 lb. bag of sand from my local Home
Depot and placed in a 5 gallon bucket. You take
a scoop of sand by using wedge, and then place
the ball on top of the sand. I would use the
BunkerBoard in my backyard, and aim for targets
that varied in distance. In addition, I would
also alternate my practice by sometimes using
my 56* Cleveland Sand Wedge and my 64* Dave
Pelz Wedge made by Orlimar.
Although the above was the primary way which
I practice using the device due to convenience,
when possible I would take the Dave Pelz BunkerBoard
with me to a local practice range that has a
sand trap. I would then alternate hitting shots
with the BunkerBoard in the sand trap, and then
without the BunkerBoard. In addition, since
I am a regular at the Eagle Quest Golf Dome,
I work on my sand game there about once a week.
So what results did I have to recommend a product
that costs about $100? Well, prior to using
the product my sand play was poor at best. However
during this past season, and specifically during
our trip to the PGA Merchanidse Show my sand
play was very good. However, don't take my word
for it. Here is a quote from a frequent playing
partner who is brutally honest with me about
the state of my/our games. Joe Lamoureux of
Cumberland, Rhode Island writes:
"I have played golf on a regular basis
with Dan over the last two years. His sand play
was a lot to be desired before he started practicing
with the BunkerBoard.During our recent golf
trip to Florida, his sand play was very consistent
and very good both from greenside and as well
as fairway bunkers. Dan was successful from
various lies and yardages and his confidence
was evident. I am planning to work with Dan
and the BunkerBoard this winter in the Golf
Dome's sand trap to get ready for the upcoming
season."
