PRO-files
with Stephen Diemoz,
Head Professional Montaup Country Club
Portsmouth, Rhode Island |
It is a typical early spring
day in southern New England. The weather is
beginning to turn from the cold winter to those
tantalizing spring days which just taunt you
to hit the golf course. It is just after 3 pm
as I pull into the Montaup Country Club parking
lot. For those who may be unfamiliar with Montaup,
is arguably one of the finest of Rhode Island's
golf courses. Nestled between the Mount Hope
Bridge and the bay, Montaup has breathtaking
views coupled with top-notch playing conditions.
As I park my car, I see a number of fellow golfers
putting on the practice green. I head for the
pro shop and find Stephen in his office.
How long have
you been at Montaup?
18 years. Prior to Montaup I was a former assistant
in Rochester , New York Midvale CC, and Stafford
Country Club in New York. Plantation Golf and
Country Club in Venice, Florida.
How did you get involved in the golfing
profession?
I got into the golf business by accident. Got
an accounting degree. Couldn’t get a job
right away. Heard about an assistant pro job,
and got the job.I developed my game from there.
I really was a mediocre player shooting about
low 80’s. I had to work hard on my game,
to pass the Player's Ability Test (PAT). Montaup
has been my first and only head professional
position.
