Golf Shaft Basics: How to get properly fitted for a golf shaft.

Player chooses improper loft for their swing

The average player is using a club that has to little loft (ex. 8.5, 9.5) with a shaft that is too stiff for their swing characteristics. Such a combination, as you may imagine, can negatively impact your score.

For instance a mid handicapper that currently uses a 9.5 driver with a 75-gram stiff shaft hits it okay but struggles with distance and has a wicked (for our RI readersJ) slice. After we use a launch monitor, we may be able to identify that the golfer’s swing speed is such that a regular flex shaft in combination with a higher lofted club (i.e. 10.5 degrees) produces a more optimal launch angle thus creating more distance. So in a nutshell, players should not only have clubs fitted to suit them but also the shafts. This is done so that optimal performance can be achieved and maintained. Confidence and consistency are created and remain intact regardless of a pressure a player may feel during a round (level of play or ability are not a factorJ)

So, what shaft manufacturers do I like?

Now with so many shaft manufacturers to choose from it can be confusing. Consequently, I will focus on the one that I trust implicitly and know can accommodate players of various ability levels.

The manufacturer whose shafts that I prefer and use in my own equipment is FUJIKURA composites (FOO-GEE-CURE-AAHH). Fujikura for over 27 years has produced the most consistent, high performance composite shafts in the world and their shafts have variable kick points that are based on one’s speed. Below are two shafts that I have installed on many golfer’s clubs:·

  • 757 SPEEDER (suggested price $350.00) it is a “low torque, MID/HIGH BEND, lightweight, designed for the better player with a quick tempo.
  • VISTA PRO 50 (suggested price $105.00) it is a “mid torque, LOW/MID BEND, SUPER ULTRALITE, designed for the average player with a smooth tempo”.

CONCLUSION

Even though you may be a recreational golfer, I encourage to leverage current technology of the knowledge of your local golf professional to help maximize your game. Keep the above tips in mind, and I can assure you that your game will be off to a new beginning and you can rest-assured that you have selected the best equipment to maximize your game!
