Editor's Note: Keith Allcock,
Assistant Golf Professional at Firefly Country
Club in Seekonk. I have been a student of Keith's
for the last two year's. He works under the
tutelage of one of New England's esteemed teachers,
Phil Fecteau who was a former New England PGA
Teacher of the Year in 1998.
Keith is an accomplished player in his own right.
A former Bryant golf team member, he also won
the Attleboro Open in 1994, Publinks championship
in 1995, and has previously placed 2nd in the
New England Assistants Championship and 11th
in the Cape Cod Open last year.
So take a few moments to read Keith's pro tip
to get your spring golf off to a great start!

In
my opinion, from working with hundreds
of different students of varying skill
levels, the biggest cause of miss-hits,
(top shots, fat shots, shanks and off-center
hits) is not as many believe ....'You
picked up your head again. Keep your head
down this time.' Instead, what I have
seen, is that unbeknownst to the golfer,
TENSION has snuck into his or her grip
at impact. Ideally, you would like your
grip pressure to remain the same (RELAXED)
all the way throughout your swing.
A great drill that I have many of my
students do to achieve a relaxed, tension-free
grip is to have them swing with their
eyes closed having them remain as relaxed
as possible all the way to their finish
position. If the student cannot complete
the swing all the way to a full-finish
position, then it is obvious that their
is too much tension in there swing.
Practice this 3-5 times a week for 25-50
swings in your backyard, and before you
know it you will be making tension-free
swings.

Another good complementary drill is swinging
your club in practice sessions only with your
finger tips. This allows you to feel the club
closing at impact. One of my students was actually
proficient at hitting balls during our practice
sessions by only using his finger tips.
Practice these tips, and you will be on your
way to some successful spring golf.
